Points to ponder

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former. (Albert Einstein)

Calvin : People think it must be fun to be a super genius, but they don't realize how hard it is to put  up        with all the idiots in the world.
Hobbes : Isn't your pants' zipper supposed to be in the front?

Technology is a way of organizing the universe so that man doesn't have to experience it. (Max Frisch)

Tell a man there are 300 Billion stars in the universe and he'll believe you. Tell him a bench has wet  paint on it and he'll have to touch to be sure.  (Jarger)

Calvin and Hobbes : "The surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that it has never tried to contact us."  (Bill Watterson)

Have you ever noticed.... Anybody going slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac? - (George Carlin)

chilhood memories : 1

The single story colonial house on the corner lot in Green Lane 10,Penang.Spacious halaman, planted with cermai, mempelam and rambutan trees. White rabbits everywhere, hopping to and fro freely. So many of them, maybe 200?No cages, just underground burrows, beneath green cow grass. They poked their white heads out now and then. At night their eyes looked red from the light shone at them. Very jinak, some even went into the house. Always welcomed. Menu? Grass of course, but with bread crumbs too. Those mamak breads, the skin is too hard to eat so they are dried in the sun and fed to the rabbits. They love the bread crumbs. There was one big male rabbit, black and white, very old, moves slowly.Granma's favourite.

Underneath the ciku tree there was a buaian and a wooden garden bench. Used to sit there often,petang- petang.

The walls, light blue, were always cool, in the morning, in the afternoon and at night. Silver colour gates, tubular shaped iron with floral motives. The chain link fence no longer visible, outgrown by pokok teh, served as hedges. Very tall,at least a man's height. Loved to search between its tiny leaves with little sister for red cherries, not edible but loved to crush them.

The interiors were cool too, thanks to the air bricks and wide windows. The house spreaded to the back, long hall and wide dining area. Granma's room at the front looking out to the porch. Granpa's room at the back near the kitchen. Loved to run from the front door right up to the back.

The kitchen. Classic red colour concrete floor, cool and cracked. White ceramic sink and stove.High transparent ceiling, airy. Constantly filled with aromas of kari, dalcha, puri and acar. A batu giling, grind stone, sits by the bathroom's door.Heavy and smooth from years of usage. Granma grinded red spicy chilies with it,her strength were remarkable.

A door opens to the back lane. Granma used to buy fish and vegetables from the mamak on a motorcycle. The neighbour's black dog never stopped barking. Cacat ke? Always frightened by the dog.

Granpa spent his time in his room, reading the Koran, books, zikir. Granma never stopped for anything, always busy with household chores. Loved to run into Granpa's room to greet him and will always receive a knock on the head. His way of displaying his affection. Sakit! Little sister was neither spared. Auntie's room was filled with accessories - bangles, earrings, make up. Loved to have her make us up. Personal choice-blue eyeshadow, pink lipstick and red blusher-which one?

Remember that house...airy,bright,spacious,cool,homely.Always will be in my memory. The single story colonial house on the corner lot in Green Lane 10,Penang.

end 2004 start 2005

like everyone i was also shocked by the tsunami tragedy that hit asia and particularly malaysia. i agree with my sister that we are indeed lucky not to be affected by the killer waves but i think we are blessed because of our close proximity to the earthquake's epicenter.thanks to sumatra that separates us from the disaster.Alhamdullilah.

as a muslim the tragedy really made me feel humble by the power of mother nature,God's creation.it's amazing how a force so huge can still be felt until sri lanka and africa, imagine it's wrath, nature's fury that's totally beyond our control. it's frighthening to think that maybe it's only one tenth of what Judgement Day is.i also think that God is sending us a message,a reminder, because we are so far away from Allah's path.nobody can deny that.

personally, i'm glad that our PM ordered to cancel all new years's concerts, parties etc. we don't need that,we muslims.we are so accustomed to these western cultures that we come to think that we need to organize these new year's celebration in order to have a good start in the year ahead.what happen to solat syukur, doa selamat and surah yassin?i can't deny that myself. i don't go to these new year's parties but i also haven't done much amalan for my pahala account.so that is also not good.

the tsunami really opened my eyes to things that we take for granted in our lives. we hate the outfit we wear, things are not going our way, the food's lousy...but have you ever imagine that a single wave can just sweep you out of your precious life?nope, never.

it is not too late to improve to be a better muslim and i pray that i have the strength to do so.

ironically, it is a good start to a new year. 2004 ended with a tragedy but it helps 2005 starts with everyone humbled and reminded of God's powers.if it leaves us reflecting our lives, our sins, our good deeds and strive to be a better person, then it's already a new year's resolution.Insya Allah.God help us.Amin.

Happiness is...

                                                HAPPINESS IS....

sleeping soundly at night
and waking up feeling bright
having a good breakfast
and reading the newspapers

reclining in front of the tv
viewing a good movie
surfing the internet leisurely
and downloading articles freely

sitting comfortably in a nook
reading an interesting book
playing with a cute puppy
or cuddling a cute baby

relaxing with your buddy
and trying hard to be witty
playing a game and having fun
whether indoors or under the sun

getting a convenient parking lot
after driving around, feeling hot
coming across an old friend
while walking round a bend

going to a restaurant to eat
and not paying a lot for it
buying something desirable
at a price that's affordable

holding out a helping hand
to a neighbour or a friend
helping a person cross the street
as the person is old or weak

giving help whenever possible
to anyone who is less able
providing any type of aid
to those who are less fortunate

Try reading it when you are near a submition, it'll feel like a bliss.

Poems that don't fit anywhere else

The Jello On My Fork
By Corn Syrup

It sits there,
the jello on my fork.
My fork holds the jello like a new born
the jello on my fork

The jello explores the forks many curves,
the jello is content.
But it deserves better.
The jello on my fork.

Sliding through the teeth,
the jello escapes the metal
and lands in the bowl it first came from.
The jello in the bowl.

The fork is lonely,
and seeks another companion.
And dives in to the depths.
After a few seconds it finds a red dream.

The fork cradles its catch.
The jello is happy.
The fork is happy.
The jello on my fork.

I'd rather be
In the melancholy sadness I think I'd rather be a freight train
better than being insane
Or I'd rather be a sign post
better than being french toast
I'd rather be riding on the train tracks
better than being a coat rack

-Chris

Roses and Violets

Roses are red
Violets are blue
but the coolest of all
are Doug's shoes

Roses are red
Violets are blue
but most of all
do you chew?

Roses are red
Violets are blue
I usually puke
when I look at you

Roses are red
Violets are blue
but the best team of all
is definitely PSU

Roses are red
Violets are blue
I'm tired of flowers
how about you?

-Mark

Judith McNaught and the lot

I was having a plate of maggie goreng at aliff the other day with my best bud,X, when we suddenly got to talking about romance novels that we were so hooked into when we're still in school.Yeah, it was sooooooo damn romantic back then but now when I discussed it with X it sounded so ridiculous that we started to crack jokes about those damn novels.Hahaha...I know there's always a generation of innocent,naive,romance-craving teenagers that will always be there to sustain the sales of these surreal love stories.I know my time is wayyyyy over.
So,before getting into detail about these romance stories we must first know who writes them.Almost 99.99% of the authors are female (as Simon Cowell would've said it,"Well, that surprised the century!").I think this somehow set the public's paradigm on female as romantic schmucks and damsels in distress and will always be gladly saved by a knight in shining armour.I hope I'm not exaggerating.
Anyways, due to my years of experience of reading countless romance novels (I started since form 2) I can easily point out some of the authors signature writing style. I always read Judith McNaught,Jude Deveraux,Judy Garland etc.I can say that most of them exaggerate about the character's physical appearance beyond belief.I mean, who do you know has that 'fine sculptured face'?huh...???or how the heroin (let's get hindustani here) reveals 'one creamy shoulder'?Now you know not even Johnson's Milk Bath can do that for your skin hahaha!!!The rest you know it yourself but I'd like to give some other examples such as 'bronze chest' (even though this duke live in chilly England),'full lips' (ok,we know ALL caucasians have lips like George Bush-which is not so full),'long callused fingers' (he handles estates and balances cheque books, where did he get calluses???),'long slender legs' (she doesn't work out, does knitting and discusses Socrates and yet she manage to have those killer legs, the world is so unjust!).
Well, the list goes on and on my friends but there are some other traits that you can find. One disturbing thing is that they are all rich, they're either dukes or barons, the guy is always dark and brooding while the girl is either clumsy as a clown who somehow managed to capture the guy's heart or a sweet nymph that is sooooo oblivious about her beauty and sexual appeal, which, again, make the guy go ga-ga over her. Most of them is almost like Hindi movies where the guy and the girl detest each other but in the end they were literally joined at the hip.And they have cute babies too!haha....Let's not forget to mention the love scene,I mean,if they were to be made into movies I don't think Halle Barry can stand a chance of winning the Oscar! (wink wink).
I feel like a defector, traitor and orang Melayu would say, pengkhianat because I was one of the people that was crazy about these books but now I'm writing about them in the opposite light. Well maybe because I'm finally matured (aww..came on!) and get the taste of what real life is all about.Especially when you are in a relationship, things are not sweet all the time. They were entertaining and I learnt a lottttttt from them.......
Peace out!
